Painting, 1897, 65×81 cm

Description of the artwork «The Boulevard Montmartre. Spring morning»

In the 1890s to Camille Pissarro the long-awaited recognition, his paintings sold for tens of thousands of francs. Aging and losing his eyesight, the artist can finally afford to travel, enjoy a comfortable life and rent a hotel room in Paris when he pleases.

Writes Pissarro Boulevard Montmartre day, in the evening, night, in the morning, in the rain in the winter, spring, summer – from a hotel room with three Windows. Then the same experiments were carried out with other boulevards and urban landscapes: Avenue de La Opera, Boulevard Italien, The Louvre, Rue Saint-honoré and the Rue Saint-Lazare. Some images of the Louvre at different weather conditions during the 1900 – 1901 Pissarro have as many as 18. Noisy, bright, urban squares and avenues he live and breathe, every moment changing, like the face of a man.

But "the Boulevard Montmartre. Spring morning" at Sotheby's in 2014 was sold for a record for a Pissarro worth 32 million dollars (19.9 million pounds). The twentieth century worked hard for this picture and it has acquired a history that is worth a lot.

Before the Second world war the painting was part of a huge private collection of impressionist, which had been collected by the German Jewish industrialist Max Silberberg. In the late 30's the house of the collector was captured by the SS soldiers, and his collection of paintings, including "the Boulevard Montmartre. Spring morning", went under the hammer. Zilberberg, together with his wife died in a concentration camp, and the canvas after some of the travel was at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. For several years it remained in the ownership of the Museum, while in 2000 there was held a fair return canvas Zilberberg heirs. The new owner is equally important as a sign of appreciation to the Museum for its exemplary preservation of the painting, allowed her to leave the exposition until his death. In 2013, the owner of "Boulevard Montmartre" died – at the Sotheby's auction came one of the most important canvases of impressionism.
