The Magnificent Baroque: the Art of Genoa 1600-1750

National Gallery of Art, Washington organizes an exhibition "The Magnificent Baroque: the Art of Genoa 1600-1750."

The exhibition will trace the rise of the Baroque style, which developed from 1600 to 1750 in Genoa, a prosperous port city on the west coast of Italy. Here famous artists from Northern Europe and local artists created works of unprecedented beauty and visual power.

Five centuries ago, trade and banking turned the Mediterranean port city of Genoa into a cosmopolitan centre of wealth and culture. The newly wealthy inhabitants, eager to demonstrate their prosperity, invested in building and decorating churches, chapels and palaces. Lured by lucrative commissions, Rubens, Van Dyck and other leading artists from all over Europe flocked to Genoa. There they used the sumptuous Baroque style with local artists to create the magnificent paintings, sculptures and works on paper featured in this exhibition.
