Face to Face. Picasso and the Old Masters

Ausstellung 22 Februar − 26 Juni 2022
Picasso Museum holds an exhibition "Face to Face. Picasso and the Old Masters".

Visitors have a unique opportunity to discover the connections between Pablo Picasso and the leading artists of the past. In the rooms of the museum, Picasso's major works will be located alongside paintings by El Greco, Francisco Pacheco, Giovanni Battista Caracciolo, Francisco de Zurbarán, Cornelius Norbertus Guisbrets, Bernardo Lorente Herman, and Diego Beharano.

By juxtaposing Picasso's work with that of the Old Masters, the exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to discover the connections between Picasso's work and those artists. These "pairings" not only allow viewers to make specific comparisons between Picasso's paintings and those of the masters in order to understand how deeply Picasso's art was rooted in the Spanish tradition. The comparisons also allow us to understand how he transformed these traditions into 20th-century revolutionary art. The themes in the exhibition revolve around the social and psychological significance of portraiture, the role of illusionist realism in paintings, and reflections on mortality.
