The most common version of the origin of the word "baroque" alludes to the Portuguese language: la perola barroca is a pearl of irregular shape. Despite the Portuguese origin of the word, the birthplace of the style is Italy. In Rome, the so-called majestic manner of painting emerged, glorifying the Catholic saints, the Pope, the aristocratic elite. The genre of a ceremonial portrait, emphasizing the status of a person in society, became popular. The rulers in such portraits were often surrounded by the ancient gods. The main subjects of the Baroque painting are mythology and religion. Often the ceilings of the buildings are painted in lush clouds feature biblical and mythological subjects.

One of the most famous figures of Baroque art was the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens. His subjects are full of inner movement and tension. A riot of colours, bright, rich hues and radiance create a colour symphony. Anthony Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Jordaens, Snijders also brought fame to the Flemish Baroque.
The brightest representative of Italian Baroque was Caravaggio. In contrast to the colour composer Rubens, Caravaggio put his subjects in twilight. He was a skilled master at sharply contrasting light and shadow. The rays of light reveal expressive gestures and facial expressions of the subjects from the gloomy tones, emphasizing monumentality and plastic perception. The artist’s paintings are emotional and dynamic, and the depicted subjects are very realistic. They are filled not with aristocratic majesty, but with real living feelings. Therefore, the despair of the apostle in "The Taking of Christ" is so real and the surprise in "The Incredulity of Saint Thomas" is so sincere.

Annibale Caracci, Pietro da Cortona, Andrea del Pozzo, Tiepolo and many others also succeeded in Italian baroque painting. The Venetian school gained immense popularity with its Veduta genre — the urban landscape. Canaletto succeeded most in this genre.

Spanish Baroque painting is represented by Diego Velázquez, who helped to overcome the "church" barrier and became an artist of psychological portraiture. In French painting, the characteristic features of the Baroque style are inherent in the ceremonial portraits by Hyacinthe Rigaud.

The baroque style existed for different time period in different countries — from 60 (countries of Eastern Europe) to 250 years (Italy). And in some countries, the Baroque style is best reflected not in painting, but in architecture — the Russian Empire
Empire (fr. empire – imperial) is the style of the late classicism in architecture, applied art and painting. It was popular during the first three decades of the 19th century.
It is characterized by the craving for monumentality and greatness: so that it immediately becomes clear to everyone that the emperor’s power is almost limitless! The Empire style arose in France during the reign of Napoleon, later it was replaced by the eclectic art movements currents and then itfound its revival in ... the Soviet Union. Read more
