The beach at Villerville

Painting, 1864, 45.7×76.3 cm

Description of the artwork «The beach at Villerville»

Beaches in Villerville and Trouville that idle fancy of the public, making exercise on sea shore – it started with this thank eugène Boudin. It is noteworthy that he at first was quite skeptical about the story, which took on the advice of his teacher Eugène Isabey.

Is this real? Dolled up in the nines Madame and Monsieur for him, from childhood accustomed to earn a piece of bread (in 10 years Eugene performed the duties of cabin boy on the ship of his father) for him, worshipped the beauty of nature that seemed too unimportant, insignificant, empty. But the decision to undertake the development of this story was correct. This low, not elevated on the leisure of wealthy people at the resort allowed Budino to concentrate on the actual paintings tasks, without being distracted by the excitement of the "face of nature", which caused it to work on the scenery and not thinking about the injustice of the social order. This plot has enabled the artist to focus on the essential: the light, the sea waves and fluttering dresses, the play of shadows and soft transitions of color. Exactly 10 years later will be announced the establishment of the direction that will make the protagonists of his paintings light and color... One of its founders, the famous impressionist Claude Monet in his youth was a disciple of Boudin.

And in this picture, it looks like the main hero – wind. Flutters dress and hair, chasing clouds and rolling waves onto the shore, forcing the ladies to the left, wrap up tightly in their cloaks, and the girl on the right is tightened to hold the umbrella. Budino inherent in the use of muted colors we are seeing in this case. Even rare specks of red tones do not contrast, but a calm, soft. It seems that it captures the special status of the air, a subtle combination of colors, light and air space, reflection time and to avoid this word, of course, a fleeting impression, impression, seen from an artist.
