Ladies Baroque. Artists XVI - XVII centuries in Italy

What was the role of artists in the late Renaissance and the Baroque era in Italy? How did they demonstrate their creativity in a world dominated by men? These are prerequisites for the autumn exhibition.“Ladies Baroque. Artists XVI - XVII centuries in Italy " at the Ghent Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibition has about fifty paintings that shed light on the role of female artists in Italy from 1550 to 1680.

A prominent place in the exhibition is occupied by Artemisia Gentileschi - perhaps the most famous artist in Italy of the XVII century. Curators compare her works with the works of her contemporaries - Sofonisby Angwissola, Fede Galicia, Giovanna Garzoni, Orsola Maddalena Cacci, Lavinia Fontana and others. To contextualize the paintings, the exhibition includes objects of decorative art from that period.

"Ladies Baroque" demonstrates how ingeniously these artists overcame the limitations of their time. For this, the museum has collected an exceptional collection of works from such prestigious museums as the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Berlin Art Gallery and the Borghese Gallery in Rome, as well as a number of private collections. Many of these works are rarely exhibited or shown for the first time.
