Images of Rome in the etchings of Piranesi

Exhibition November 15 − December 27, 2018
Exhibition"Images of Rome in Piranesi etchings" introduces viewers to the works of an outstanding Italian engraver of the XVIII century from the collection of the graphics fund of the Lviv National Gallery of Art.

The exhibition features etchings from the famous album “Views of Rome” (“Vedute di Roma”, 1748-1778), which was reprinted many times both during the artist’s life and after his death. Depicting the views of the city on his prints, Piranesi combined reality with romantic fiction. He changed proportions and exaggerated the scale of famous buildings, giving them greater persuasiveness, changing their location, creating new, sometimes impossible in reality, views, in which the magnificent structure looks even more grandiose; added non-existent objects, used the expression of sharp contrasts of light and shadow.

Giovanni Battista Piranesi (October 4, 1720, Mogliano Veneto (near Treviso) - November 9, 1778, Rome) - Italian archaeologist, architect and graphic artist, master of architectural landscapes. He had a strong influence on subsequent generations of artists of the romantic style and - later - on the surrealists. He made a large number of drawings and drawings, but erected few buildings, so the concept of "paper architecture" is associated with his name.
