Fabric of prosperity

Exhibition September 12, 2018 − January 27, 2019
The Garage Museum of Contemporary Art hosts an exhibition "Cloth of Prosperity".

This is an international project dedicated to clothing in art outside the context of the fashion industry. The exhibition consists of works by more than 40 artists from all continents - from famous representatives of the historical avant-garde, the Soviet and Brazilian underground to the classics of modern art and the authors of a new generation.

The organizers borrowed the title of the exhibition from the treatise “Introduction to the foundations of morality and legislation” (1780) by philosopher Jeremiah Bentham, who wrote about achieving a just society through the universal “utility principle” that creates the “fabric of prosperity” of any society.

The exhibition organizers created their own on the “silk roads” of the 21st century, which are based on global routes and production cycles of raw materials, fabrics and ready-made clothes. Launched from Stockholm to Dhaka and from Ivanovo to Biella, the research route of the exhibition reflects the irrelevance of stereotypical ideas about the East and the West, the global North and the South and confirms the fundamental equality of artistic techniques, methods and traditions.
