“Alex Khatkevich. Art, experience, the path of knowledge "

Exhibition November 21 − December 9, 2018
Within the framework of the Fifth Moscow Festival of Creativity of People with Peculiarities of Mental Development “The Thread of Ariadne”, the exhibition project “Alex Khatkevich. Art, experience, the path of knowledge. "

Project curators: Alexandra Migunova-Tihanyuk, Andrei Epishin, Daria Krotova, Alla Orlova

Alex Khatkevich - the author of paradoxical graphic works created by him for many years of isolation in the walls of a closed psychiatric clinic. The exhibition project allows you to identify and demonstrate the hidden mythology of an outsider, concluded in the transition from the real world, through the initial explanation of the constituent parts of objects to a fully virtual character space.
The analysis of Alex Khatkevich’s world view determined the nature and principles of the exhibition space construction. In addition to the original author's graphics, the exhibition is complemented by video art created by modern media artists Alexandra Mitlyanskaya and Letoy Dobrovolskaya, as well as texts - explanatory notes by the artist found on the back of his works. These texts are presented both in the original and in line-by-line translation from the Latvian language, carried out by translator Dana Ponomarenko.
The inclusion in the field of contemporary art of creativity of authors with peculiarities of mental development is usually interpreted unilaterally, from the position of the need to destigmatize and legitimize the latter. And indeed, today the psychopathological emphasis in the approach to the “outsider” has shifted noticeably towards the socio-cultural and art criticism. However, do not forget about the reverse impact of this work on the modern artistic process. It is obvious that the appeal to the "outsider" allows the contemporary artist to rise above the professional routine and significantly enrich the language of high art.
The purpose of the exhibition project is not only to acquaint the wide audience with unique graphics, but also to demonstrate the reflection of modern artists who have found in the work of Alex Khatkevich a powerful plastic potential and building material for the new figurative media art.
It is also worth noting that this project significantly helps to reveal the problems of the Round Table “Creativity of outsiders in the context of the theory of enactivism” (November 22, 14.00-17.00 THG Moscow, Maly Tolmachevsky Pereulok, 6, p. 1), implemented in parallel with the exhibition. The fundamental indistinguishability of the real and the fictional, the unreal or the hypothetically possible allows Alex Khatkevich to live in his own mythological space, classifying him not as a virtual reality, but as real events. The author is autonomous, selectively related to the world, generating and extracting meanings. The extraction of meaning is the knowledge that he exercises through creativity. Thus, the exposition vividly illustrates the theory of enactivism, which treats knowledge as an embodied action, as the construction of its own unique space.
The exhibition is open from October 21 to December 9
