Pablo Picasso. Suite Vollard

Exhibition November 10, 2018 − February 3, 2019
Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide presents an exhibition of the famous etchings by Pablo Picasso "Suite Vollard"This is a magnificent graphic series of 100 lithographs, created by the artist in 1930-1936 and acquired in 1937 by the famous Parisian collector and publisher Ambroise Vollard (1866 - 1939). Maria-Teresa Walter, in whom Picasso served as the model for most lithographs of this series was in love. The collection consists of 97 engravings and 3 portraits of Amboise Vollard, the man through whom she got her name.

The dominant theme of the suite is “Sculptor’s Studio” (46 etchings), which describes Picasso’s interaction with classical sculpture. The etchings depicting his young model, Maria Theresa, are a dialogue between the artist and the artist, the artist and the model. Different scenarios are played out between the sculptor, the model and the work created. Among them is the classic myth of Pygmalion, in which the sculptor is so fascinated by his creation that it comes to life when touched by the artist. Classic linearity and studio relaxation also alternate with darker, violent scenes. The latter are represented by tales of cruel passion and the Minotaur (15 etchings), half human, half animal of the classical myth, which became central in Picasso's personal mythology.
