Exhibition January 8 − March 17, 2019
Exhibition"Whistler and Nature" at the Fitzwillam Museum, Cambridge, sheds new light on the work of the great late Victorian master James MacNeil Whistler. He was born in America, but he lived in Great Britain for a significant part of his life, was known as a brave artist with a revolutionary attitude to the natural world.
The exhibition features about 90 paintings, sketches and engravings. The curators tell what influenced his knowledge in the field of observational drawing and his artistic style. The exposition also provides a new light on Whistler's work in the context of the attitude to the landscape in British art and design. The artist created the images of smoke-filled warehouses, harbors and factories in order to demonstrate a new type of production that promptly burst into the landscape of the Victorian era.
