Florin Mitra. Retrospective 1974-2002

Exhibition February 23 − April 6, 2019
This comprehensiveExhibition devoted almost thirty years of creativity of the Romanian artist Florin Mitroy. The exposition takes place in four separate chapters: landscapes, portraits, erotic drawings and zinc plates.

The “Landscapes” section combines an ensemble of small symbolic landscape paintings created between 1977 and 1998. Each composition depicts an almost abstract countryside, bathing in the changing light of different moments of the day.

The “Portraits” section is a gallery of human figures. Strong dark lines form the faces and heads of stylized individuals, usually in semitones, on a dense monochrome background. Absolutely black outline strokes resemble German expressionistic woodcuts, and the posture and expression of figures resemble religious motifs of Orthodox icons.

The “Erosion” section consists exclusively of ink drawings on paper, made mostly in the 1980s. Among the classic erotic and nudist studies, there are images of the mythological goddess Antropos, which was an allegory of the artist’s fate, as well as an echo of his obsessive ideas.

The section "Signs" is devoted to the symbolic and figurative zinc plates of Mitroy, made in the last years of his life. Carved in slightly shimmering zinc plates, the works unite Mitroy's favorite themes, where allegorical and erotic images are combined into more stylized, if not phallic, motifs.
