Decorated Island: Sri Lankan Art

Exhibition December 9, 2018 − June 23, 2019
«Decorated Island: Sri Lankan Art"- the first comprehensive review of the art of Sri Lanka, organized by the American Museum, presents about 240 works on nearly two millennia of Sri Lankan history.

The image of the jeweled island, first used in the Greco-Roman accounts of the precious stones of Sri Lanka, inspired numerous literary descriptions of the island’s wealth and tropical beauty. The exhibition displays precious decorative objects made of gold, silver and ivory, as well as photographs of the XIX century, which depicted the unusual monuments and landscapes of Sri Lanka.
