Adiya Millett. Broken patterns

Exhibition February 5 − August 25, 2019
In his exhibition "Broken patternsAuckland-based artist Adia Millette examines identity, personal memory and collective history. She realizes her memories and thoughts through various means, including collage, assembly, photography, textiles and painting.

The main theme of Millett is the history of African Americans and the history of African American women in particular. Her comforters, made of discarded clothes, sheets, other blankets and curtains, hint at homework and craftwork.

The exhibition also presents miniature houses, whose intriguing mirror-like interiors are charged with psychological excitement, conveying the memory of the losses.

As Millet rethinks objects and materials, she adds layers of meaning to the distorted space of her work, which acts as structures for human subjectivity — vessels for a multitude of psychological states of being.
