Graphic samples of the Russian icon. The outcome of the restoration

For the first time, an exhibition will be held at the Central Museum of Old Russian Culture and Art named after Andrei Rublev “Graphic samples of the Russian icon. The results of the restoration ".

The exhibition presents the most interesting and significant in artistic terms, sheets of icon samples of the second half of the XVII - the middle of the XIX century.

Icon samples (or prorisi) - working material, which icon painters have long used to create their works. These are graphic paper sheets with images of figures of saints and various subject and allegorical compositions from which icons were written.

By them it is possible to trace how the plot repertoire and the style of Russian icon painting changed over the centuries. Many sheets contain signatures of famous icon painters and household notes of the time.

Due to the long and painstaking work of restorers, for the first time the museum provides a rare opportunity to look into the creative workshop of icon painters of the distant past, to learn and imagine how the icons were created.
