Lucho Fontana: On the Threshold

Exhibition January 23 − April 14, 2019
Metropolitan Museum presents an exhibition “Lucho Fontana: On the Threshold”.

Lucho Fontana (1899–1968) - Italian painter, sculptor, theorist, abstractionist and innovator.

This is the first major exhibition of Lucho Fontana in the United States in more than forty years, which revises the career of one of the most innovative artists of the twentieth century. The artist is widely known for his series “Cuts”, paintings with cuts, which became symbols of the post-war era. The exhibition presents extraordinary samples of this cult series.

"On the threshold" reveals Fontana's approach to painting, assessing his work in sculpture and decorative art. His early career was marked by a period of fruitful experiments, whether challenging sculptural norms in Italy using clay or actively participating in the Argentine avant-garde, Fontana's early work from the 1930s and 1940s. The exhibition presents the highlights of this period, including sculptures of women, warriors and fine ceramics inspired by underwater images.
