Wilhelm Hammershoy at the Jacquemar-Andre Museum

Exhibition March 14 − July 22, 2019
The Jacquemart-Andre Museum shows a new perspective on the unique Danish artist Wilhelm Hammershøy. “The singer of loneliness, silence and light” is famous for its empty and subtly written interiors, in which a woman sometimes appears with her back to the viewer.

The master led a secluded life in the circle of his family - and the connection with her is explored by the curators of the retrospective "Wilhelm Hammershoy". For the first time they compare the works of the artist with the paintings of his brother Svend, brother-in-law Peter Ilsted and friend Karl Holsø. Forty works that reveal the mysterious and poetic world of the artist are borrowed from private collections, from the largest Danish and Swedish museums, as well as from the Orsay Museum and the Tate Gallery in London.
