Jim Shaw. Family romance

Exhibition February 26 − April 13, 2019
"Family Romance" - an exhibition of five new paintings by Jim Shaw in the Metro Pictures gallery. Known for his combination of personal, political, and surrealistic narratives, Shaw explores the sphere of behavioral psychology and themes surrounding the family unit, which he describes as "the beloved core of the American dream."

The name of the exhibition refers to the psychological complex defined by Sigmund Freud in 1908, when a small child or teenager imagines that they are really children of parents of a higher social status than their real parents. Shaw recalls that he did it himself as a child, although, in his words, he "claimed that he was changed at birth and he really was a Martian."
