These modern figurines express movement and innovation - the figures themselves and the way the Hopi artists eventually invented a new art form.
Modern Hopi artists created this thread specifically for sale. The carvings include images of special spiritual Hopi creatures, as well as clowns and characters that belong to oral folklore traditions.
On
exhibition There is a selection of recently presented modern Hopi sculptures from three families: Mike and Juanita Igls, Terry and Becky Reides, as well as Mel and Joana Parelman.
When these families began collecting their collections in the 1980s, Hopi artists reacted actively to market changes in various ways. Creating their figurines from a single piece of cotton, the Hopi artists added detail and depth thanks to a combination of fine cutting with pyrography (burning wood), paints, stains and varnishes.
