Oliver Lee Jackson: Recent Pictures

Exhibition April 14 − September 15, 2019
National Gallery of Art presents the exhibition "Oliver Lee Jackson: Recent Pictures".

Oliver Lee Jackson (b. 1935), an American artist, engraver and sculptor, created a complex set of works in which visual influences are expertly intertwined, starting from the Renaissance and ending with modernism, with the principles of rhythm and improvisation taken from his study of African cultures and American jazz.

The exhibition features 18 paintings created over the past 15 years, many of which will be shown publicly for the first time. Often, Jackson's large-scale paintings mix the figurative elements of bodies with colorful abstract compositions and energetically processed surfaces. Each picture creates its own space and world, enchanting the viewers and forcing them to spend time behind the fascinating works.

Jackson was born in St. Louis and taught at California State University in Sacramento for many years, and now lives and works in Oakland, California.
