William Copley: The coffin in which you are being carried away

Exhibition December 4, 2018 − May 12, 2019
«William Copley: The coffin in which you are being carried away»Represents a group of paintings from 1956 to 1958, highlighting the artist’s critical but humorous viewpoint of William Copley on European and American culture.

An important connecting figure between surrealism and pop art, Copley developed a unique style and iconography that used cartoon motifs — diminished, simple shapes depicted in thick black strokes and flat colors, most often men in bowling hats and naked women — critical and playfully explore topics including nationalism, erotica, and art history.

The paintings in the exhibition represent a special Copley style: carved and painted with a silhouette in bold colors that combine French surrealism and American pop art.
