The Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York presents an exhibition of new works by artist Simone Lee, winner of the 2018 Hugo Boss Award,
"Loophole retreat".
The exposition includes a set of sculptures and sound installation, as well as the text of the famous historian Saeed Hartman, which will be available in the form of a table. The exhibition explores narratives about general education, sustainability and resistance. The name of the exhibition and its associated public program was taken from the writings of Harriet Jacobs (1813–1897), a previously enslaved abolitionist who pseudonymously published a story about her life.
Throughout her career, which encompasses sculpture, video, and social practice, Simone Lee (b. 1967, Chicago) constantly and aggressively focused on the life experience of black women. Her sculptural forms, made from materials such as ceramics and bronze, combine timeless beauty with valences that are both deeply personal and piercingly political.
