Kentucky University Museum of Art: Good Land

Exhibition June 1 − December 8, 2019
Julien Dupre's painting “On Pasture” occupies a central place at this exhibition, which considers the power of the earth as a source of food, as well as a marker of place and history. Usually, this popular painting, created in France in 1883, is contextualized by other genre scenes or examples of realism, but here it was placed next to Ben Shan’s gouache “Farmers”, in which three contemplative men seem stuck compared to a capable young woman who is trying to drag a cow across the field.
