Atl. Fire, Earth and Wind

The National Museum of Art in Mexico City hosts an exhibition of Gerardo Murillo, known as Dr. Atl, “Atl. Fire, Earth and Wind". The exhibition presents more than 130 works of the author. The artist showed great interest in geology and volcanology, which he embodied in his landscapes. In them, Dr. Atl talks about the birth and eruption of the Paricutin volcano in Michoacan between 1943 and 1945. The paintings of the painter are a portrait of the complex and stunning nature of Mexico.
Gerardo Murillo Cornado was born in 1875 in Guadalajara. He studied at the Academy of San Carlos (National School of Fine Arts) in Mexico City. Received a scholarship granted by the government of Porfirio Dias to continue their studies in Europe. He studied philosophy at the University of Rome and criminal law at the Sorbonne in Paris. He lived in England, Germany, France, Spain and Italy, devoting himself to painting and journalism. Upon returning to Mexico, he worked at the Academy of San Carlos. Developed the idea of "Atl-colors" - a picture consisting of wax, resin and oil, intended for dyeing fabric, paper or stone. He was awarded the National Award for Merit in the field of fine arts. Died in 1964 Mexico City.
Dr. Atl, one of the great artists of the 20th century, who, according to the director of the museum, Carmena Gaytana, "is able to move the masses by his work and is the creator of the priceless artistic chronicle of our country's geography."
