Medu Artistic Ensemble: People will rule!

Exhibition April 27 − September 2, 2019
The artistic ensemble Medu was formed in the late 1970s in opposition to the apartheid policy of South Africa regarding racial segregation and violent injustice. Through graphic design and poster production, participants strongly articulated a call for radical change, advocating for decolonization or the rule of the majority (not whites) in South Africa and in neighboring countries.

Medu, which means “roots” in the language of sepedy, developed and acted underground, as its name implies. Persecuted by the South African defense forces, members of Medus lived and worked in exile. Contrary to the ban on their existence, the team of Medu consisted of up to 50 South African and foreign artists, musicians and writers.

"People will rule!“This is the world's first exhibition in North America. Medu’s offset lithography and screen-printed posters combine sobering and revolutionary images with bold slogans that mobilize citizens in word and image to support social and economic justice and promote pan-African solidarity.
