Atrium project: Ellen Berkenblit

Exhibition May 4 − November 24, 2019
In the last partof the project The lobby atrium of the Chicago Museum of Modern Art features a fresco by New York artist Ellen Berkenblit. This new work, entitled “Leopard's Lane” (2019), continues the last two topics in the painter’s painterly practice: the expressive potential of cats and the energy inherent in urban elements such as trucks, brake lights and chimneys.

Over the past few years, Berkenblit has included the striped tiger cat in her work, finding infinite compositional potential in a simplified, even cartoon profile that remains relatively constant. This tactic of using schematic witches, birds, clocks, flowers, and horses as starting points for challenging exercises in color, surface, and space guided most of her work.
