Christina Quarls

Exhibition April 4 − August 30, 2020
Los Angeles artist Christina Quarles paints bodies that are exposed not only to the severity and seriousness of the physical world, but also to the pleasures and pressures of the social sphere. In her ambiguous and memorable scenes, figures whose limbs, bodies and faces collide and merge with familiar household objects seem strange due to her choice of color and experimental pictorial gestures. Her work explores the universal experience of being in the body, as well as how race, sex and sexuality intersect, forming complex identities.

The largest presentation of her work to date,Exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago combines a selection of her works made in the last four years that explore illusions in the history of painting.
