Meleko Mokgosi: Bread, Butter and Strength

Exhibition October 19 − December 29, 2019
Large-scale episodic cycle of painting by Meleko Mokgosi "Bread, butter and strength»Forms a new chapter in its ongoing series, Democratic Intuition, which explores ideas about how democratic concepts affect our lives, love and relationships at the macro and micro levels.

This exposition of twenty groups explores the theme of feminism in the context of southern Africa and examines the implications of the division of labor practices by sex.

Mokgosi's approach to storytelling through the form of historical painting allows us to compare what we see in the pictures with the realities of inequality and the gender division of labor that we know from experience. This approach to content also inspires us to reflect widely on politics, power structures and the role of history in the creation of the present nations of southern Africa.
