As three different views of the artist’s life and work, the canvases demonstrate the range of Manet’s innovative vision: “Still Life with Fish and Shrimps” (1864) focuses on the paint itself; The Old-Timer (circa 1865–71) emphasizes the artist’s participation in the history of art and contemporary visual culture; and Madame Manet (circa 1876) propose to review his biography.
