Darkness through glass: Allegory and Faith

From 1500 to 1700, print publications in low-income countries as a group were the most qualified and prolific throughout Europe, and print publications, often in combination with text, played an important role in the religious culture of the Netherlands during this period. The creators of the engravings used allegory in their work to solve the most fundamental questions connecting man and the divine: love, virtue, vice, sin, death and salvation.

"Darkness through glass: Allegory and faith in Dutch prints from Lucas van Leyden to Rembrandt"will be the first major exhibition that will systematically consider the form, function and significance of allegorical engravings made in the Low Countries from the 16th to the 18th century.
