Nicholas Mas: Dutch Golden Age master

Exhibition February 22 − May 31, 2020
This exhibition is the first dedicated to Nicholas Mas, a leading artist of the Dutch Golden Age and one of Rembrandt's most important students.

The exhibition, which presents more than 35 paintings and drawings from collections around the world, covers the whole life of Mas, held in Dordrecht and Amsterdam.

The paintings, thanks to which he became famous, the intimate scenes of everyday life, form the heart of the exhibition. The artist’s carefully designed stories often break the fourth wall, making the viewer a participant in the scene when the characters overhear or indicate illegal actions.

The exhibition also presents paintings of the early history of Mas in the style of Rembrandt, as well as the work of a later period of his life, when he devoted himself almost entirely to portraits and brought elegance and arrogance to the genre.
