The Crazy Among Machines exhibition will allow us to review the legacy of the forgotten artist Lee Adler and show how the images created by him in the 1960s and 1970s portended the urgent concern of today with how human lives are intertwined with technology.
A native of Brooklyn during the industrial heyday, Adler came to art at the age of 40, having already made a successful career in marketing. In the late 1960s and 1970s, he rushed headlong into his new occupation - painting. Adler created a visually amazing attachment to the forms of living things. At the same time, Adler’s bizarre and irritating compositions cause the processes of swallowing, digestion, and excretion of matter as it moves through living and mechanical systems. In Adler’s work, machines are humanized, and human figures become machines, and its forms continue to reflect something essential in our reality today, since unfortunate cyborgs are confused about where “nature” ends and technological culture begins.
