Actual: abstraction from the collection of the Grand Rapids Museum of Art

"Actual: abstraction from the collection of the Grand Rapids Museum of Art"- this exhibition was created to convey fresh ideas and perspectives to museum visitors.
Eleven abstract paintings and works on paper from the museum’s permanent collection were selected for the exhibition, most of which were created by artists 50 years or more after the invention of abstraction in the early 20th century.
During the 1950s and 1970s, when most of the work at the exhibition was created, artists evaluated whether abstraction could remain an appropriate form of expression. Exciting innovations in the visual arts took place during these decades - often in a negative reaction to abstract painting, which some considered elitist and outdated.
The exhibition demonstrates how abstraction still proved to be a challenging arena for artists and capable of self-expression through a variety of unique approaches.
