Mernet Larsen: regular, reoriented

Exhibition March 16 − September 8, 2019
Mernet Larsen(b. 1940) creates intriguing paintings filled with humor and tension, depicting geometric figures that inhabit the space in such a way that defy gravity and ordinary looks.

The artist sets up ordinary scenes - people play cards or have lunch, attend a faculty meeting, read in bed - but creates them with dizzying, distorted spatial relationships that convey a sense of insecurity. A disorienting perspective treatment places the viewer inside and outside the paintings simultaneously.

Along with indifferent facial expressions and subtle body language, Larsen's enigmatic compositions reveal the essence of everyday human interaction. Curved, disturbing and awkward paintings are frozen monuments that are both strangers and acquaintances.
