Apollinaris Vasnetsov. Demyanovo

Exhibition September 30 − November 30, 2019
The State Tretyakov Gallery, together with the State Museum-Reserve of P.I. Tchaikovsky, present an exhibition project“Apollinaria Vasnetsov. Demyanovo.

The Tretyakov Gallery displays eighteen landscapes of Demyanov at the exhibition, stored in the museum-apartment of Apollinarius Vasnetsov and the main collection of the Gallery. Paintings complement archival photographs of the estate from the collections of the Gallery and the Tchaikovsky Museum.

The project is dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the foundation of the P.I. Tchaikovsky. Its purpose is to help revive Demyanovo, recall the history of the estate and attract the general public to the problems of preservation and restoration of this unique monument.

From 1903 to 1917, Apollinary Vasnetsov spent the summer months in Demyanovo. Here he wrote over 50 landscapes and field studies. For fifteen years Vasnetsov tirelessly studied the ancient estate. The habitable space of an old manor became for him a real open-air workshop. In Demyanov, the artist constantly experimented, paying much attention to the texture of the picturesque surface, the transmission of the play of light and shadow, the identification of the emotional tonality of the landscape motif. The Demjan cycle is the pinnacle of the landscape art of Apollinaria Vasnetsov. An organic combination of the traditions of the Venetsianov school and the characteristic of landscape painters of the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries of movement to the luminiferous pictorial surface is a peculiarity of Demyan paintings.
