Henri Matisse. Sight

Exhibition October 25 − December 15, 2019
Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts (ROMII) holds a unique exhibition“Henri Matisse. Sight".

The exhibition features 120 lithographs of the artist’s famous works, which demonstrate his inexhaustible energy both as an artist and as a philosopher. All of them are accompanied by texts from his articles, books, letters and thoughts.

Matisse inherited and summarized in his work the spiritual wealth and the best features of the culture of the past and the culture of his time. A remarkable painter, draftsman and engraver, illustrator and master of book design, a monumental decorator, theater artist, sculptor, ceramist, master of tapestry and stained glass, the creator of a new type of decorative art - paper clippings painted with gouache - this was Matisse's widest creative range. A special place in the artist's work throughout his life was occupied by the portrait genre. Matisse was more interested in the human face than still lifes or landscapes. The reflection of the feeling that the model aroused in the artist, and not the external accuracy at all, became for Matisse the starting point in the creation of all his portrait images. He always managed to express all his emotions in a plastic image. The constellation of portraits presented at the exhibition clearly reflects Matisse’s attempts to find new ways to display the real world and man.
