Tradition and avant-garde: the main features of Russian ballet

Among the many transformational artistic phenomena in Europe at the beginning of the twentieth century, the fusion of modern and classical dance, music and theater design, emerged from the famous troupe of Sergei Diaghilev's "Russian Ballets", stands out as a real kind of creativity.

Wadsworth has been the main repository of theatrical sets and costumes associated with the Russian Ballets, since in 1933 he acquired more than 160 works on paper from leading dancer and producer Serge Lifar.

For the exhibition "Tradition and avant-garde: the main features of Russian ballet"30 drawings and watercolors were selected from renowned designers Alexandre Benois, Leon Bakst and Natalia Goncharova, as well as from a number of leading Parisian artists, including Jean Cocteau, Andre Derain, Giorgio di Chirico, Juan Gris and Fernand Leger.
