Gertgen that Sint-Jans

The Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem presents an exhibition of one painting "Gertgen that Sint-Jans".

Artist Gertgen that Sint-Jans (1455/65 - 1485/95) is one of the most mysterious artists who lived and worked in Haarlem. Due to the exceptional quality of his work, he is considered the founder of northern Dutch painting.

Very little is known about the life and work of Sint Jans. They say that he was a student of the artist from Harlem Albert van Ouoter (c. 1400/20 -1475/95).

Today, twelve paintings by Geertgen that Sint Jans are known. Thanks to a special loan from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the work “Adoration of the Kings” (circa 1480/85) can now be temporarily seen at an exhibition in the Frans Hals Museum.
