Petite Galerie du Louvre for the fifth season offers an exhibition entitled "The figure of the artist". She accompanies the cycle of exhibitions that the museum in 2019-2020 devotes to the geniuses of the Renaissance: da Vinci, Donatello and Michelangelo.
It was during the Renaissance that the artist asserted his independence and sought to leave the status of artisan in order to occupy a special place in the city. This invention of the artist’s figure, however, has an older and more complex history than it can measure the breadth of the Louvre collections, from the first signatures of the masters of antiquity to self-portraits of the romantic era.
