Dewing's Poetic World

Exhibition November 27, 2019 − November 30, 2020
Freer Art Gallery presents the exhibition "Dewing's Poetic World".

Thomas Wilmer Dewing, best known for his tonal compositions depicting a lone female figure, was actually part of an active social network of collectors, artists and art dealers.

Why do women in his paintings seem passive, locked in quiet isolation, when his own life was a whirlwind of parties, dances and theatrical performances?

A study of Dewing's social connections shows how his art was influenced by his friendship with Charles Lang Freer, who encouraged him to pursue Japaneseism, and with architect Stanford White, who designed elaborate frames for many of the paintings on display in this intriguing exhibition.
