Spilliart's work is characterized by dramatic perspectives and a quiet glow. He is best known for his series of mysterious self-portraits and atmospheric night scenes of Ostend. His visual studies of loneliness connect Spilliart with European modernists such as Edward Munch and Wilhelm Hammershoe.
This is the first monographicExhibitionSpilliart’s works in the UK, which will feature about 80 works on paper - from images of his hometown and coast to later works that capture the tranquility of the forest outside Brussels. The exhibition will bring together works from public and private collections throughout Belgium, France and the USA, presenting a journey through the life of a surprisingly insightful and unusual artist.
