Piranesi Drawings

Exhibition February 20 − August 9, 2020
As part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of Piranesi onexposurea complete collection of his drawings is presented, unique in that it belongs entirely to the master himself. From his grandiose images of ancient Rome to his records of the recently discovered ruins of Pompeii, the fantastic drawings of Piranesi are compelling.

Piranesi was born in Venice and raised in Rome. In his etchings, he is best known for his highly charged atmospheric images of antiquity. His work as a printer, whether it was a study of Roman architecture or a demonstration of spatial fantasy flights in the famous Carceri series (Prisons), has been the subject of numerous exhibitions.

The exposition also addresses fascinating questions about his practice raised by new research: the relationship between drawings and engravings, as well as his developing style as a draftsman.
