Method and Material: Tempera Painting

Exhibition "Method and Material"explores the fascinating history of tempera through a series of key items from Huntington's art collections.

A pair of portraits of the 15th-century master Domenico Ghirlandaio serve as a springboard to explore the fascination with temperament that manifested itself in Britain and America centuries later in the works of artists such as Joseph Southall (1861-1944), Mark Gertler (1891-1939) and George Tucker ( 1920-2011).

Widely used in Italy from the 13th to the 15th centuries, the tempera came into disrepair with the advent of oil paints from Northern Europe, and its recipe and technique were almost lost. While British artists, along with William Blake, sought to recreate the pure, vibrant colors of Italian tempera painting.
