Personal space: Self-portraits on paper

Exhibition February 8 − June 21, 2020
Boston Museum of Fine Arts at Clementine Brown GalleryPersonal Space: Self-portraits on Paper.

The exposition presents self-portraits of artists of the XX-XXI centuries, working in various techniques and styles. Visitors will see the works of Robert Rauschenberg, Kate Kolwitz, Jim Dyne and dozens of other authors. The traditional self-portraits of reputable masters coexist with the works of young talented artists.

The organizers of the exhibition are asking, “Can a self-portrait portray more than just the appearance of the artist?” Dozens of works, from traditional drawings to conceptual, experimental attempts to express the author, allow viewers to find their answer to this question. The exposition shows the evolution of a self-portrait as a genre from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day and allows predicting the further development of the genre.
