Sounds, codes, images: Acoustic experiment in the visual arts

Exhibition October 4, 2020 − May 30, 2021
Slovak National Gallery organizes an exhibition in the halls of the Esterhazy Palace“Sounds, Codes, Images: An Acoustic Experiment in the Fine Arts”.

The exhibition project is a review of the history of the representation of sound as an abstract phenomenon in the visual arts, from the avant-garde era to the present. Among the authors whose works will appear at the exhibition are Peter Cusack, Milan Adamchak, John Cage, Anton Yasush, Frantisek Kupka, representatives of the Fluxus movement, Woody and Stein Vasulka, Ladislav Kupkovich and others.

The selection of paintings will show how sound takes on color and shape, becomes a three-dimensional object or architecture, and what psychological, as well as mathematical and physical assumptions determine its visual form. The project will introduce viewers not only to samples of fine art (painting, drawing, graphics), but to sound installations, acoustic objects, films and multimedia projections.
