The Infinity of the Universe in the Art of Giovanna Garzoni

Exhibition May 28 − June 28, 2020
Uffizi Gallery in the halls of the Palazzo Pitti holds a large retrospective exhibition“The Infinity of the Universe in the Art of Giovanna Garzoni”.

The exposition includes more than 100 paintings by the artist, illustrations on parchment and drawings, as well as a 4-meter floral altar decorated with porcelain, ivory and bronze.

Flowers, plants and exotic shells, strange insects and animals with pronounced characters bordering on humans: the forms and poetry of nature take pride of place at the artist’s exhibition. Giovanna Garzoni lived in the courtyards of Venice and Turin, spent several years with the Medici in Florence, worked in Naples and France, where she painted a portrait of Cardinal Richelieu, was a friend of Artemisia Gentileschi, another great 17th-century woman artist with whom she shared and travel and creative experiences. In her harmonious compositions, the artist masterfully combined exotic objects of various origins, such as Chinese porcelain, Pacific sea, Mexican pumpkins and flowers, South American and other exotic plants, images of animals.
