Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) invites you to visit the exhibition
“Riopell. Call of northern landscapes ".
The exposition is dedicated to the work of Jean Paul Riopelle (1923-2002), an outstanding figure of contemporary art in Canada and the whole world. The exhibition contains about 175 works and over 200 artifacts and archival documents.
The paintings show an artist imbued with a surrealist interest in non-Western art, inspired by his friend and collector Georges Dutyuis and the writings of anthropologists and ethnologists such as Marius Barbeau, Jean Malory and Claude Levi-Strauss. Laid out in chronological order and by theme, the exhibition offers visitors a guided tour of Riopell's works (paintings, sculptures and works on paper) from the MMFA collection and about 50 institutional and private collections in Canada, the United States and France.
