The sleeping princess V.M. Vasnetsov. The story of one masterpiece

The State Tretyakov Gallery and the House-Museum of V.M. Vasnetsov is invited to visit the exhibition “The sleeping princess V.M. Vasnetsov. The story of one masterpiece ".

This exhibition is an attempt to study one of the most famous and important works of the master. For the first time, preparatory works for a painting from the collection of the House-Museum of V.M. Vasnetsov: sketches that trace the development of the author's creative thought from the first sketch of the theatrical mise-en-scène to the finished pictorial composition; as well as sketches created in the artist's country estate Novoye Ryabovo, where the master was looking for inspiration to create the fabulous nature of the sleeping kingdom. The exhibition is complemented by a multimedia program that reveals the meaning of the picture.

The plot of the painting "The Sleeping Princess" is based on a plot about a sleeping beauty, which is very common in European literature, widely known in the Middle Ages. The most famous versions of the tale belong to the European storytellers Charles Perrault and the Grimm brothers, but the poetic version of V.A. Zhukovsky. Vasnetsov completed the first sketches for the painting in the first half of the 1880s, but he was in no hurry to implement the plan. In 1901, Viktor Mikhailovich conceived the painting cycle The Poem of Seven Tales, which, in addition to The Sleeping Princess, included other fairy-tale pictures: The Princess Nesmeyana (1916), The Frog Princess (1918), Baba Yaga (1917), "Kashchei the Immortal" (1917-1919), "Sivka-Burka" (early 1920s) and "Airplane Carpet" (1920-1923; 1925). The canvases of the Poem of Seven Tales were never shown to the general public during Vasnetsov's lifetime. After the death of Viktor Mikhailovich in 1926, the posthumous exhibition of paintings and drawings by V.M. Vasnetsov "(1927-1933), which for the first time appeared before the viewer" The Sleeping Princess ". Contemporaries considered it one of the best works of Viktor Mikhailovich.
