Phantasmagoria. Between Science and Faith

Exhibition December 16, 2020 − June 7, 2021
The Museum of Fine Arts of Strasbourg together with the Museum of Alsace present an exhibition "Phantasmagoria. Between Science and Faith ".

The exhibition takes advantage of the atmosphere of the museum, while using original, immersive and interactive scenography. Prints, posters, press articles and books illustrate the genesis of the phantasmagoria, the figure of the phantasmagor and reveal technical secrets in action: magic lantern plates, devices and tools, sometimes extremely rare. The course focuses in particular on presenting the historical, iconographic and artistic sources underlying this phenomenon, which affected all of Europe from 1790 to 1860.

The phantasmagoria, which appeared at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, arose as a result of the merger of technical and scientific achievements and the popularity of black romanticism. This exhibition takes us back to the genesis, history and progeny of these exhibitions, which for several decades have made the European public shudder. Phantasmagoria refers to the spectacle of the projection of luminous figures brought to life in the dark, imitating supernatural phenomena. The first phantasmagoria performances originated in Paris at the very end of the 18th century. Technically, they use the optical device of the magic lanterns, known since the 16th century.
