Rich Flanders. Masterpieces of the Northern School

Exhibition January 4 − December 26, 2021
Museum of Fine Arts, Bordeaux presents an exhibition “Rich Flanders. Masterpieces of the Northern School ".

An excellent selection of mythological and religious paintings showcases all the creative wealth of the Golden Age of the Flemish school of painting.

The paintings on display showcase the creative richness of Flanders post-Trent art. In fact, the Cathedral of Trent (1545-1563), the driving force of the Catholic Reformation in the face of criticism from Protestants, confirmed in its decrees the usefulness of images in Roman worship and considered them necessary, in particular, as support for prayers. The inventiveness that artists had to display after the iconoclastic destruction and the wars of religion is particularly evident in Rubens' masterpieces.
